The Truth About Affirmations

by Saundra Berry, C.Ht.

It seems that the use of affirmations is on the rise. We use them for everything from wanting more money to overcoming addictive behavior. Affirmations are statements, and for lack of a better term, that get us thinking in a more positive way. There is so much negativity in our world right now and it becomes extremely overwhelming to stay positive and to have faith. You really can’t watch the news without seeing death and destruction. So, the more positive input we can get the better.

I have been doing affirmations and visualizations since I was a teenager. I didn’t really know what I was doing—I just knew my life was changing in positive ways that I could clearly see, so I have continued the practice throughout my life and learned little things along the way to make them even more powerful.

In the 90’s I was attending a Unity church and I learned a really powerful way to pray. What we were taught is to always affirm what the person is praying for. In other words, if you said you wanted prayer for better health, the prayer would be, “________(insert name here), I affirm that you are in excellent health. I see you healthy, happy, and whole. I am grateful that you are in perfect and balanced health”. This process became the corner stone for writing my affirmations and assisting others in writing their affirmations.

Affirmations are important, it’s like positive thinking; the act of affirming and thinking positive allows you to tap into the flow of energy that holds great magnetism in order to receive, celebrate, and embrace a better life. Affirmations light your inner spark, your inner vision and affirm your faith.

Often people think that just reading these affirmations daily will magically bring about a happy life. It will boost a more positive outlook for some, but, for others, it can be frustrating when things don’t seem to change. Sometimes it is simply the wording of the affirmation does not resonate with you. If that is the case, reword the affirmation; write affirmations in the language that resonates with you, because it is, after all, about you.

Now that you’ve crafted the best wording for your affirmation lets put it into action. There is work that needs to be done and only you can do this work for yourself. It is important that you do your part. The moment that you affirm something, the universe goes to work to bring that which you affirm, to you, it is set in motion. Yet, you have to be open to receive and live the affirmation. In the Teachings of Abraham, they talk about the “Art of Allowing”…simply put, you have to be open and allow the change to take place!

In hypnotherapy school I learned that 21 times makes a habit. Therefore, begin your work with affirmations by writing them down. I suggest writing it a few times in the morning and a few times at night before you go to bed. If you write your affirmation down 21 days in a row, you will have formed a new neuro-pathway in your brain, which will make the writing of your affirmations, second nature. The more you focus your attention and intention onto the positives, the more positives that you will get.

To further your work, once in bed, use visualization to boost your affirmation into fruition. Here is a how-to blog for visualization: http://www.path2change.com/#!How-To-Do-Creative-Visualization/c1niq/CED49955-8FBD-4EF4-9629-0D6B2F16BD91.

Once you have read the above information, you know how to do creative visualization and you can add it as part of your daily/nightly routine, right along with brushing your teeth. You will attract exactly what you place your attention on, so be clear about your intentions. One time I was part of a beautiful ritual where we were to plant a seed to nurture and bring into fruition into the spring and summer months. I said, “I want to learn and grow, as I planted my seed”, sounds logical for someone who wants to broaden their horizons, right? Well, that was one of the hardest years for me because I was not specific about the way in which I wanted to grow and learn. There were LOTS of lessons that year! So, think about what it is you truly want to bring into your life because if you do the work and are open to the change, it will come to fruition!

Working with visualization and affirmations are powerful tools to manifest your goals and dreams, just remember to do the work and don’t give up!

Note: If you are looking for an effective affirmation to promote healing in your mind, body, and spirit, when you are going off to sleep, affirm, “My mind, body, and spirit, are healing everyday in every way”.
