Friendship IS the Best Medicine
A few days ago, my friends and I got together for a potluck to unwind from the week and have some laughs. To hang with friends who love us unconditionally, is to feel a great weight being lifted from our shoulders. We know we are amoung those that know our hardships and our failures, as well as our joys and triumphs, and no judgement. With true friends we don't have to be "on", we can just be ourselves. Getting together with friends can turn everything around.
With my friends, one is retired and takes care of an elderly parent and the other is working a fulltime job, our current life experiences are quite different when it comes to the day to day. So, it’s nice to get out of yourself and hear about what someone else is experiencing in their life. Seemingly as if by magic, everyone gets a chance to do a “highlights” version of their week and a little venting (we don’t want to dwell on what has been), and sometimes we bounce ideas off of one another. Regardless, when we get together, it gets loud and silly. Within minutes you might see tears, deep sighs of releif, and then loud belly laughs howling from the house. Now, that could be from the margaritas, or the fancy coffee drinks, or the chocolates laced with espresso, but some good belly laughs are just what the doctor ordered. I love these ladies so much and I so appreciate their 30+ years of friendship. We have been through and seen each other go through many challenges, celebrations, births, deaths, retirements, disabilities, etc. and I cherish them with all my heart and I just don’t think I could survive withhout my friends.
I know how easy it is to just shut everyone out and stay in your own little world but true friends are what we need to survive. So, if you have been neglecting your friends, going straight home without socializing, or just feel too tired, it’s time to rally yourself and your friends and let loose. You will reduce your stress level with the laughter, the love of good friends, and get some much needed time for you to unwind. You might think, “I just don’t have the time”, MAKE THE TIME FOR FRIENDS, it is the one prescription I can recommend….and that I know for a fact, works on relieving stress, every time.
