Learning How to Release Negative Thinking and Negative Self-Talk

Are you someone who seems to constantly obsess and have negative thinking? I was until I learned about the Law of Attraction. I would find myself obsessing on a thought that was negative and I would think about it constantly and it seemed, and as if by magic, my thought became reality. I remember saying to someone, “it’s like I have a dark cloud looming over my head”. At the time, I felt like I didn’t have any control over my thoughts…rather than allowing thoughts to just come and go without fixating on them, I would just “think” too much, obsessing about everything little thing, keeping myself in a state of fight or flight, full of anxiety.

Once I was introduced to the Law of Attraction, I learned that “like attracts like”. It made complete sense to me. Think negative, get negative; think positive, get positive. So, I began to be fully conscious of my thoughts and whenever I would begin to think of all the things that “could” go wrong, I would take a deep breath and become present in the moment, not letting my mind wander. In order to "retrain my brain" I would just focus on what was right in front of me. If I was chopping onions, or doing laundry, or driving my car, I would just bring my thoughts to that moment and do whatever it was to the best of my ability. After a while, I began to realize how many times a day my mind would replay negative thoughts and negative self-talk. I went as far as to get a small notebook and put a tally mark each time one of those negative thoughts would barge in. It was astounding!

I wanted to retrain my brain to stop with all that negativity, so I decided that I would redirect my mind onto a pleasant memory, or something that made me laugh from the past. I figured if I could control that process and learn a new way of thinking that I could take control of all of the negativity and turn it in to something positive. So, any time my mind would slip into all the “what ifs” I would replay those happy memories in my mind. The more I learned to do this; I realized I was beginning to have more control over my thoughts.

It was about unlearning the old habit of negativity and learning to shift my thinking onto more positive things, and positive outcomes. It seemed that I was learning a new habit, a habit of positive thinking. While learning the process, I had not allowed my mind to just wander because I was trying something new. But when I was confident that I was thinking in a new way, I allowed my mind to wander once again and I realized that my thinking was about more positive than negative.

Today, I can say that I am completely solid in thinking in a more positive way. I'm like you, it’s not to say that I don’t still have negative thoughts, or negative self-talk, now and then, but now I am able to realize it much sooner and refocus on the positive. I have chosen to release those negative thoughts at the moment I hear them rattling around in my head and by doing that, my life has completely turned around. I am happy knowing that I do have control over my thoughts, not the other way around. It helped my self esteem and allowed me to realize that I have more control over my thoughts than I ever thought possible.

So, if you are someone who feels as though a dark cloud is glooming over you, know that you can take control of your thoughts. When something goes wrong, remember, we ALL learn through adversity, learn the lesson and move on; don’t fixate on it. It is what it is. It’s okay to have thoughts that are unpleasant, but, we don’t have to live there, right?

I know that life can throw us curveballs and that everyday might not be perfect, but you have the power to turn around any negative thing into something positive. We are here to learn…so learn the lesson and then MOVE ON! Give yourself permission to break that old habit of negative thinking, worry, and negative self talk, and begin to learn a new way of thinking. It is all about you taking control of your life, of your thoughts, and CHOOSING to be more positive. Don't think that you won’t ever have another negative thought, but you will spend a lot less time, if any, obsessing about it if you stay in the moment and remember that you have control of your thoughts; not the other way around.

Many Bright Blessings!
